Why does the same form feel completely different when made from plastic, metal, wood, or stone?
Why can one object feel temporary,
while another feels as if it belongs for decades?
The answer begins with material.
Material is not simply what an object is made from.
It changes how we experience it.
How it feels in the hand.
How it responds to light.
How it carries weight.
How it ages.
And how we treat it.
Plastic can feel precise and effortless.
Metal can feel cold and permanent.
Wood carries warmth and grain.
Stone carries weight and time.
Every material has its own language.
The question is not:
Which material is best?
The question is:
Which material is right for the idea?
At NOCT,
material is never chosen at the end of the design process.
It is part of the idea from the beginning.
We choose high-strength plaster because it allows us to hold two qualities that rarely exist together:
precision and weight.
It can preserve the fine details of an architectural model,
while carrying the mineral presence of something much older.
But we do not want the surface to feel perfect.
We want it to feel honest.
Small variations remain.
Subtle traces of casting remain.
The hand remains.
Because material should not only show us what an object looks like.
It should tell us something about how the object came into existence.
This is why material matters.
It influences more than appearance.
It changes our relationship with the object.
How we pick it up.
How carefully we put it down.
Where we choose to place it.
And perhaps,
how long we decide to keep it.
Before becoming an object,
material decides what remains.
